The Global Water Southwest Water Reclamation Facility in Maricopa, Arizona recently completed a successful upgrade to its headworks system with the installation of an Or-Tec Package Headworks Unit.
This all-in-one stainless steel system was selected for its ability to screen the wastewater to 3mm (1/8") protecting the plant from rags, wipes, plastics and other non-biodegradables found in today's wastewater which clog pumps, wrap around rotating equipment and settle in basins. In addition, the Package Headworks removes and classifies grit. The system will protect the community of Maricopa's investment in their wastewater treatment plant for years to come saving both time and money in operation and maintenance cost.
The Or-Tec Package Headworks System combines three critical processes into one unit:
- Micro Bar fine screen with 3mm openings for effective fine screening
- A screenings compactor washer to reduce screenings volume and odor
- A grit removal system designed to capture sand and grit before it settles in the wastewater plant
The system combines two unique features, the ability to effectively screen to 3mm without the use of washwater or brushes, and an automatically adjusting weir in the grit system which optimizes grit removal efficiency in both low and high flow events.
Installation required only a level pad, power supply, and wash water access for the compactor washer - eliminating the need for expensive concrete channels or vortex chambers typically associated with traditional headworks setups. The result is a streamlined, low-maintenance solution that enhances operational efficiency without expanding infrastructure.
Or-Tec Inc. supplied the unit in partnership with IES Southwest Inc., our regional distributor serving Arizona and New Mexico. The system is now fully operational and is contributing to improved and protected wastewater management at the Maricopa facility.
